Review

PWGen 1.4 is a password generator for Windows computers. The application is rather simple, but powerful enough. It can create cryptographically secure passwords determined by the depth of security that you want. On the first step of the wizard, you will be asked how long you want your password to be. The default option is 72, but you can go all the way up to 2048 bits. On the following step, you are asked to add some text to give the application some entropy. After that, you are given three options that define the types of characters to be used. A hexadecimal approach will use only letters and numbers, a Base64 approach will use lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and some other characters. The passphrase option allows you to insert a text file with a set of passwords and to let the computer choose from one of those. This is the last step, and depending on the depth of security you chose on step 1, you will either see a relatively long password or an impossibly extensive password. The longer the password is, the more time it will take to crack. Using random sequences of text and numbers in a password is the best way to go, because they make for unpredictable passwords. Even if you end up with a long password, you can use a password manager so you don't have to type it in every single time.
Advantages
  • Easy-to-use.
  • Creates safe passwords.
Disadvantages
  • None.
